Avatar has been at the top of the box office charts for seven straight weeks now, ever since opening on December 18th, 2009.
James Cameron's 3-D juggernaut earned an additional $30 million this past weekend, bringing its total up to $594.5 million domestically, just shy of Titanic's $600 million. Just last week, Avatar surpassed Titanic in worldwide box office receipts. Very soon, Titanic will lose its domestic title as well.
Coming in a distant second this past weekend was Mel Gibson's return to cinema in Martin Campbell's Edge of Darkness. The thriller made only $17.2 million. The Kristen Bell and Josh Duhamel romantic comedy When in Rome opened third with only $12.3 million.
