Hop, out now on home video, allowed pop superstar Cody Simpson to bask in a little Hollywood glory. The Australian crooner has phoned Movie Fanatic to talk about his first foray into movie-making by providing the Easter Bunny-centered film’s theme song. Then, there were the nerves as the song suggested by Simpson was accepted as the movie’s signature song. It was I Want Candy... fittingly! The early 1980s classic by the UK’s Bow Wow Wow was about to be covered by Australia’s golden voice.
Simpson gives us an exclusive look into the process. “It was a couple of months before the movie was scheduled to be released. It was a real last minute thing. They said,
'Hey, we need a theme song for our movie. Do you want to be the voice of the theme song? We’ve had a couple people try out things.'"
He was the one who suggested the iconic song for the film that celebrates the bunny who distributes Easter candy to the masses each year. “Why don’t we do a remix of I Want Candy?” he recalled of his meeting with Universal executives for Hop. “It was nerve-racking for me because it’s such a classic. So many people have remixed it in the past. I was just like, ‘Okay, how can I make this so it lives up to everyone’s expectations of such a classic song?’ I think Universal, once I recorded it and sent it out, they all kind of fell in love with it. I was glad that it all worked out.”
Hop lands on DVD, Blu-Ray and digital download with perfect timing. The film follows James Marsden as he literally runs into the Easter Bunny (voice of Brand) as the spring holiday approaches.
Of all of Hop’s elements, there was one above all others that charmed the singer. “I love Russell Brand’s part and I’m a big fan of his. I think he’s a kick,” Simpson said. The star-struck fan even met the British celebrity. “I went to the premiere and brought my good friend along who was visiting from Australia at the time. So we went and saw it as big Russell Brand fans. We met him and I just thought his part in the movie was genius.”
Does Simpson have any sights of his own set on Hollywood? “Yeah… definitely in the future. It’s something that I’d love to do,” Simpson said. “Honestly, I have been approached about being in certain movies and I’ve been offered a couple movie roles. I want to make sure I have time for my music first. I want to make sure that I’m done with one thing before I move onto the next. I definitely have plans in the future of acting and being involved in movies, just not right now.”
