Dodd is a charismatic man who forms a new religion in post-WWII America. After taking a drifter, played by Joaquin Phoenix, under his wing, the man begins to question the teachings of his mentor.
Amy Adams (who will play Lois Lane in the upcoming film Man of Steel) also stars, along with Laura Dern, Ambyr Childers, Jesse Plemons, and Rami Malek, who has been cast as Benjamin in Breaking Dawn Part 2.
The film is written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. It premieres at the Venice Film Festival September 1, with a U.S. release date of September 14.
