The Holy Grail vs. Wet Hot American Summer: Tournament of Movie Fanatic Comedy Bracket

by at . Comments

The Tournament of Movie Fanatic Comedy Bracket continues! The Big Lebowski and Annie Hall advanced to round two earlier this week, and as the battle of Rushmore vs. Blazing Saddles closes, a new battle begins!

After Blazing Saddles took an early lead yesterday, Rushmore came back incredibly strong, beating out the classic comedy with 70% of the vote, to move on to round two.

Today, we bring you another classic vs. contemporary matchup, with Monty Python and the Holy Grail taking on Wet Hot American Summer. Vote for your favorite, then take a look at the updated bracket below!

Monty Python and the Holy Grail: Monty Python had many memorable movies, but few were as unrelentingly funny as Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The funnymen from the U.K. began their humorous attack on our world with their television show and that led to the work The Life of Brian. But it was when Holy Grail landed in 1975 that the troupe announced their presence as a comedic force to be reckoned with. Besides, there are few films out there that have spawned movie quotables as iconic as this one. Visit our Monty Python and the Holy Grail quotes page for more.

vs.

Wet Hot American Summer: An absolutely hilarious movie from then-budding comedic forces David Wain and Michael Showalter, Wet Hot is a pitch-perfect absurdist parody of the 80's camp film genre. With an amazing cast that includes Janeane Garofalo, Paul Rudd (Anchorman), Amy Poehler, Bradley Cooper, Michael Ian Black, Elizabeth Banks (The Hunger Games), and Ken Marino, every scene is a delightful, clever, high-energy homage to the comedy tropes we all grew up on. Wet Hot debuted to paltry commercial and critical response, but has since received cult status as one of the greatest comedies of the 21st century. In my view, that's the mark of a truly genius irreverent comedy. Visit our Wet Hot American Summer quotes page for more.

Oh, I wish there were still proper thaeetrs here. A few years ago we had a film club that would rent various places and show classic movies (they had a Kubrick marathon a few years ago Barry Lyndon is a seriously underappreciated film) but the movie-going public seems to be content with only seeing the top-grossing Hollywood dreck, so they quit. Now all the thaeetrs are owned by two companies, resulting in very little competition and no alternative thaeetrs. One company has the rights to HP movies, the other gets Twilight (*retch*) and so on. Twice a year this changes, since we have the Green Light festival (showing new alternative films) and RIFF (showing shitty shorts mostly). This year the latter had what I believe was the very first RHPS proper screening, with costumes and throwing stuff and such. Too rare. And I couldnt bloody afford to go. Wah.
