No one could have guessed that when J.K. Rowling sat down to write her story about a boy wizard and his date with destiny that Harry Potter would become one of the highest grossing franchises in movie history. Rowling was a single mother, sitting in a British coffee shop, when she put pen to paper… and the rest is history.
Harry Potter first hit screens in 2001 with Chris Columbus directing (he would go on and direct the second one too). Columbus deserves much of the credit for the success of the franchise as it was him that discovered the big three: Daniel Radcliffe as Harry, Emma Watson as Hermione and Rupert Grint as Ron. Can you imagine anyone else in those roles?
Even though the series would continue with new directors for each of the next several chapters, culminating with David Yates helming the final four movies, it never lost its magic… in fact, some could argue that it got better with age. History will show that there will most likely never be a series like Harry Potter ever again. Check out some Harry Potter quotes for more.
Star Trek is undoubtedly right at the top of the sci-fi world along with Star Wars. While Trek began as a TV series, and is traditionally thought of as a television property, there have been 11 Star Trek movies, with a 12th just around the corner. In fact, it wasn't until re-runs of the original series gained a following that the movies were able to happen.
Some fans claim that the "Star Trek curse" has doomed half the franchise's films (mostly the odd-numbered ones) to be awful, while the other half (mostly even-numbered) are terrific. This may be partially true, but as with any great franchise, especially one that has been alive for so long, there will be some duds.
What's more important are the terrific films. The Wrath of Khan has a special place in any Trekkie's heart, with one of the most memorable movie villains ever (Khaaaaaaan!), and an action-packed plot filled with our favorite original cast members . Then there's the recent J.J. Abrams reboot Star Trek, which captivated fans and newcomers alike, while cleverly avoiding conflicts with the continuity by creating an alternate timeline due to time travel.
