An Elton John biopic Rocketman is in the works, with John's own Rocket Pictures producing. Today, FilmDistrict is close to a $10 million deal to secure the U.S. distribution rights.
So who is going to play the iconic pop pianist? Tom Hardy (Inception, The Dark Knight Rises) is the front-runner at the moment, and while he'd have to buff down a bit, he definitely has the acting chops to pull it off.
According to producer Steve Hamilton Shaw, Rocketman will be told in a non-linear, hyper-visual, and unique manner. Lee Hall is writing the script, with Michael Gracey on board to direct.
Hopefully, Hardy is locked down in the lead and production can move forward. Currently, no schedule has been announced.
