Billy Crystal met Movie Fanatic at Pixar in the Bay Area and let us know why his character Mike, from Monsters Inc. and the upcoming Monsters University, is his absolute favorite of his career.
“Look at him! He’s so fun to play. He’s a little odd looking, but he’s got a great heart. He fights for what’s right,” Crystal said. “He’s feisty... and he’s a leader.”
As the Monsters University trailer teases, the film is a prequel to the 2001 smash hit and gives audiences an insight into exactly how Mike and his good buddy Sulley (John Goodman) first met. Teased in this Monsters University clip, the folks at Pixar wisely chose a storyline where the pros from Monsters, Inc. are mere amateurs at the art of scaring. They must learn from the best and at the same time, discover the monsters that they are fated to become.
It is also quite well known that Crystal is a huge baseball fan and even bigger New York Yankee fan. Since we think his Monsters University character Mike reminds us of a certain man who used to wear the pinstripes, we wondered which Yankee Mike most reminded him of... and it was one and the same!
“He might be like Billy Martin (iconic Yankees manager),” Crystal admitted.
“Feisty little player who became the manager four different times. He led them to a world championship as a player and a manager. He got results out of his team. He challenged them, and Mike does that in this movie.”
