In The Way, Way Back trailer, it is teased that young Duncan (Liam James) has the summer of his life. He’s spending the warmer season with his mom (Toni Collette) and her new, overbearing boyfriend Trent (Steve Carell) by the beach in Massachusetts.
When he gets a job at a local water park, and is mentored in life by Maya Rudolph and Sam Rockwell, what started out as a dismal summer, turns into the best ever.
We met Allison Janney (who stars as Trent’s often drunk -- and hilarious -- neighbor) and Carell for an exclusive video interview and asked what their best summer was. Whereas Janney admitted any of hers that found her sunning on the beach with her friends were fabulous -- Carell had a unique answer.
“After my freshman year of college, I had started to date this woman at the end of the year and fell in love,” Carell said. Sounds promising, no?
“So, my buddy and I drive across the country and I was going to surprise her at summer stock. And I got there… I immediately realized she was dating someone else. That was the summer of my life [laughs].”
