Ben Affleck has been cast as Batman in the Man of Steel sequel. As soon as Zack Snyder announced that the Man of Steel sequel would feature Batman, conjecture as to who would play the part had become almost an Olympic sport. But, most people in Hollywood would never have thought that it would be the recent Oscar winner for Argo who would become the Caped Crusader.
Perhaps why no one saw this coming is twofold: Affleck’s turn as a superhero – Daredevil – did not work out so well. Two, he turned down the chance to direct The Justice League movie. So, it would be – to borrow a The Princess Bride quote -- "inconceivable" that he would walk down superhero avenue yet again.
But in hindsight, it kind of makes perfect sense. Affleck is adored over at Warner Bros., who is responsible for all things Superman and Batman. After giving the studio another Best Picture Oscar for his work directing, producing and starring in Argo... we think Affleck could do whatever he wanted in the Warner Bros. world.
And apparently, he wanted to be Bruce Wayne and his alter-ego Batman.
One person who is excited is director Snyder and he makes a whole lot of sense in a recently released statement.
"Ben provides an interesting counter-balance to Henry's Superman," Snyder said. "He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne. I can't wait to work with him."
