Despite the arrival of another Oscar-buzzing film, the Tom Hanks-starring Captain Phillips, the marvel that is Gravity made it two-for-two by winning the box office for the second week straight.
Sandra Bullock, George Clooney and director Alfonso Cuaron continued to build on their record-breaking $55 million first weekend take by adding another $44.3 million. With its Thursday night pre-release earnings, Gravity has now banked an astonishing $123.4 million in two weeks. Yeah, I’d say it’s an Oscar favorite! And what is most impressive, and a rarity these days, is the film only dropped 20 percent in earnings from week one to week two. That. Never. Happens.
And it’s not like Captain Phillips fell on deaf ears either. That film banked $26 million in its first week of release, and with Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 landing in third with $14.2 million… that means the top three gave Hollywood an $85 million weekend from the top three films alone.
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 looks like it has guaranteed a third chapter as it has made $78 million in three weeks.
The other new film to lands in theaters this week, the sequel Machete Kills, featured a major drop-off from third to fourth place as the Robert Rodriguez movie only made $3.8 million with last week’s misfire, Runner Runner, closing out the top five with its $3.7 million.
