Machete Kills finds Danny Trejo back playing the anti-hero in Robert Rodriguez’s follow-up to his smash hit Machete.
The character was first born in a “fake” trailer in Rodriguez and Tarantino’s Grindhouse movies and there was something about him that audiences took to immediately. And for his second adventure, judging by its stellar cast we see in these Machete Kills stills (including Mel Gibson, Sofia Vergara, Jessica Alba and Antonio Banderas), so too have some Hollywood heavyweights.
We caught up with Trejo and Rodriguez movie vet Alexa Vega (Spy Kids movies) to first, ask the two why they think the filmmaker is so successful and how his contributions have permanently affected Hollywood for the better. “He’s done a huge thing for Latinos in Hollywood,” Vega said. “He gave them leading roles when no one else was. And he brought back 3D… Spy Kids 3D was the first of all these 3D films!”
“It’s like a rollercoaster ride of fun. Robert loves what he’s doing,” Trejo added of why people flock to his movies. “It’s like a huge family.”
Also, given that it is teased that Machete goes into space in the Machete Kills trailer, we asked where Trejo would like to see his character head in future installments of the Machete saga.
“The bottom of the ocean!” Trejo said.
