Machete Kills Review: So Bad It’s Good

by at .  Updated at . Comments

Machete Kills is not necessarily a film that is seen for its stellar plot. Robert Rodriguez wrote, directed, produced, co-edited and did the cinematography for the follow-up to his 2010 smash hit about a former Mexican cop bent on fulfilling his brand of justified vengeance. Danny Trejo was born to play the role and he’s back, as seen in the Machete Kills trailer… this time recruited by the President of the United States (Carlos Estevez, formerly known as Charlie Sheen) for a special mission.

Rodriguez knows exactly what he is going for with his Machete movies and does not try to do any more or any less with the film series that embraces its Mexican exploitation action fest with flair, explosions and in-your-face puns. And all the while, you just get the sense that the helmer is winking at his audience.

Movie Fanatic cannot deny that it is good fun, albeit completely over-the-top fun, and we would not have it any other way. Many Hollywood stars must feel the same way as the cast has greatly expanded from the 2010 film, as shown in these Machete Kills stills with each star even more surprising than the last.

Up-and-comer Amber Heard is Miss San Antonio, but don’t let that fool you. She is really an undercover agent and Machete’s U.S. government liaison while he heads into Mexico on his president-ordered mission to bring down the man who supposedly has a deadly missile pointed at Washington. Heard has a ball in the role and you can firmly see her tongue nestled inside her proverbial cheek.

Recent Academy Award nominee Demian Bichir is Mendez, a multiple personality revolutionary who Machete and Estevez’s president believe is behind the missile threat. Bichir may be the best thing about Machete Kills. He utterly loses it within the confines of his character. Bichir truly sinks his teeth into the scenery, as they say. Also solid is Antonio Banderas, Lady Gaga, Cuba Gooding Jr., Vanessa Hudgens and Walton Goggins. We can’t tell you what those performers are within the film… or it would be a spoiler!

Michelle Rodriguez is back in the franchise as Luz/She and plays a bigger part in things this time out. Rodriguez and Trejo have great chemistry as they seem to each play off the other and create action-fueled fireworks throughout. Meanwhile on the other side of the justice coin finds newbies Sofia Vergara as Madame Desdemona and Alexa Vega as KillJoy. Both exist solely to put an end to Machete, at Luther Voz’s request.

Oh, and who is Luther Voz, you ask? Why he is played by Mel Gibson (seriously!) who is an international arms dealer and someone who could potentially be the puppet master behind our whole terrorist threat. Gibson performs the role with flair and Rodriguez even pokes fun at Gibson’s past as the actor is game for not avoiding the elephant in the room when he appears onscreen. He refers to a "past incident," but we all know what he’s talking about.

See that’s exactly what works about Machete Kills. It is good fun and does not try to be anything else. Our Machete Kills review can easily state that the film is so bad, it’s good. If that type of movie is your thing… you will have a ball with Rodriguez’s latest.
