From the moment that first Frozen trailer arrived, Disney clearly had struck a chord with the character of Olaf, the snowman with a heart of gold. Josh Gad plays the adorable guy with such warm panache -- it’s hardly a surprise that fans have already responded to him in the role. In fact, when that Frozen Olaf trailer hit, the adoration for Olaf exploded.
Movie Fanatic caught up with Gad recently in New York for an exclusive video interview where he told us when he knew he was on to something with the character of Olaf.
“You knew what you wanted to tap into. It’s like Book of Mormon. You knew what that experience could be, but you never know what it will be,” Gad said. “To see how kids are responding, you get the feeling you’re part of something special.”
He has come a long way in the movie world in a short amount of time since we caught up with Gad for our The Internship exclusive interview. For this actor, who first caught pop culture’s eye with his turn in the Tony Award-winning The Book of Mormon, being a Disney sidekick is a lifelong dream. After all, it was seeing Robin Williams as the Genie in Aladdin that got Gad on this track in the first place!
“In 1992 I went to see a movie called Aladdin and I saw Robin Williams… and it was like stepping out of Kansas into Oz,” Gad said. “I knew I wanted to do that. I wanted to be the comic relief in my own Disney movie.”
Frozen is loosely based on The Snow Queen and stars Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel and lands in theaters November 27. Stay with Movie Fanatic for our exclusive video interview with Bell and Menzel next week!
