Return of the Jedi Lost Scene: Found!

A deleted scene thought lost from Return of the Jedi has been found and it is below. In the scene, Frank Oz voices Yoda and utters the line, “Obi-wan would have told you long ago had I let him.” Wait, what?! That kind of changes a lot in the Star Wars world.

It shows that Lucas had decided, while planning out his saga, that it would be a better storyline to have Luke find out about Darth Vader being his father from the central villain than from Obi-wan, which is how it sounds Obi-wan would have preferred it.

In that sense, Luke may have taken a different course than to confront the man in Empire Strikes Back… given that he would know ahead of time that Vader was his father.

This one line is fascinating in that one would conclude that if Luke had known that Darth Vader was the patriarch of the Skywalker clan, perhaps, just perhaps, Luke would have seen him as a potential ally that could be turned because he knew the good was inside him.

Of course that’s what plays out at the end of Return of the Jedi. But, we can imagine what could have been as we gear up for Star Wars: Episode VII

Luke: If I don't make it back, you're the only hope for the Alliance.
Princess Leia: Luke, don't talk that way. You have a power I don't understand and could never have.
Luke: You're wrong, Leia. You have that power too. In time you'll learn to use it as I have. The Force runs strong in my family. My father has it. I have it. And... my sister has it. Yes. It's you, Leia.
Princess Leia: I know. Somehow, I've always known.

[to Luke] I see you have constructed a new lightsabre. Your skills are complete. Indeed you are powerful as the Emperor has foreseen.
