It was kind of historic conducting our exclusive Saving Mr. Banks video interview with Jason Schwartzman, B.J. Novak and Bradley Whitford at the very audio studio on the Walt Disney lot where the music for Mary Poppins was recorded. See, it’s also quite fitting. Schwartzman and Novak play the iconic songwriting team responsible for not only the Mary Poppins award-winning soundtrack, but dozens of other instant classics as well.
Robert Sherman (Novak) and his brother Richard Sherman (Schwartzman) were in the trenches for weeks with Mary Poppins author P.L. Travers (Emma Thompson), trying to convince her that they, and Walt Disney (Tom Hanks), were doing great service to her beloved character by bringing her to life in a (what would become) classic musical. Right there with them was screenwriter Don DaGradi (Whitford).
The guys met Richard Sherman and talk about the priceless insight he provided. “It informed everything,” Whitford admitted.
We also get them to reveal their favorite Mary Poppins songs and what it means to them to be part of the legacy that is Mary Poppins.
And be sure to check out our Saving Mr. Banks review for more on this truly magical movie.
