The Golden Globes are set to hand out the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's best of the year awards with hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler bringing the funny. Movie Fanatic will bring you the film victors as they happen in our live play-by-play of the scene from the Beverly Hills Hilton.
So without further ado… here’s the best of the year, according to the HFPA!
8 p.m. Amy Poehler and Tina Fey hit the stage, hosting for their second time, and we're off! "This is Hollywood, they'll keep doing it until someone hates it!" So true Ms. Fey, so true! The camera pans the audience and we see Robert Redford, Julia Roberts, Amy Adams, Tom Hanks and Matt Damon. The original title of American Hustle was "explosion at the wig factory," Fey says. Nice joke!
Fey describes Gravity as the movie that shows how "George Clooney would rather float off into space than spend one more minute with a woman his own age."
8:10 p.m. Sandra Bullock and Tom Hanks hit the stage to present the first award of the night, Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture. And the winner is... Jennifer Lawrence in American Hustle. This makes two years in a row that Lawrence has given a winning speech at the Golden Globes!
8:28 p.m. Matt Damon ("I'm the garbage man," he said... in reference to an Amy Poehler opening monologue joke) arrives. He is there to introduce a clip from the nominated film Captain Phillips. That final scene from the true story still astounds us every time we see it.
8:34 p.m. Fey and Poehler take the stage to thank our hosts, the Hollywood Foreign Press, and proceed to have a blast making up names of foreign reporters and the imaginary publications they write for.
8:35 p.m. Jonah Hill and Margot Robbie arrive and the wrong speech is loaded into the teleprompter. Robbie handles it like a pro and admitted she doesn't know how to improvise when it comes to this being her first time at the Golden Globes! They are there to introduce the next nominee for Best Picture, Musical or Comedy... their film, The Wolf of Wall Street.
8:48 p.m. The real Philomena Lee and Stephen Frears introduce a clip for the latest nominee, the true story Philomena.
8:50 p.m. Diddy, Kate Beckinsale and Usher are here to present Best Score to... Alex Ecbert for All Is Lost. This is kind of a shocking victory as many thought that Gravity or 12 Years a Slave would win. What a nice speech!
8:53 p.m. That trio remain to present the Best Original Song in a Motion Picture. We would be surprised if Let it Go from Frozen does not win! And the Golden Globe goes to: Ordinary Love by U2! Given that this is the Hollywood Foreign Press, we can't say we're too shocked that they won for the theme to Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.
9:05 p.m. Olivia Wilde presents a clip from the next nominated movie for Best Picture: Musical or Comedy, Her. She has a small part in the movie, so her presence is perfect. Such. A. Fantastic. Movie!
9:06 p.m. Iron Man himself is here! Robert Downey, Jr. arrives to present the award Best Actress: Musical or Comedy. And the Golden Globe goes to... Amy Adams for American Hustle! It is looking like momentum is starting for David O. Russell's movie about the 1970s Abscam scandal.
9:19 p.m. Jim Carrey lands on stage and gets a rousing response from the audience! He's there to present a clip from the film that seems to be the one to beat tonight, American Hustle.
9:20 p.m. Christoph Waltz arrives to present the award for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture. A two-time winner himself, the winner could not have received their award from a better choice! And the winner is... Jared Leto for Dallas Buyers Club. There is absolutely no question he is the front runner for the Best Supporting Actor award at the Oscars. In fact, we would bet the farm on that.
9:28 p.m. Saving Mr. Banks star Emma Thompson presents the nominees for Best Screenplay. This is one tough category, from 12 Years a Slave and Nebraska to American Hustle... who will win? The Golden Globe goes to: Spike Jonze for Her!! We could not be more excited for this one. If there is a movie that deserves to be lauded for its romantically riveting and beautiful language, it's Her! Congrats, Spike!
9:31 p.m. A veteran of an Alexander Payne film -- and the daughter of the star of Nebraska, Bruce Dern -- Laura Dern presents a clip from the nominated film Nebraska.
9:40 p.m. An interesting pair, Zoe Saldana and Orlando Bloom arrive to present the award for Best Foreign Language Film. The winner is... The Great Beauty from Italy. This is kind of a shocker as the favorite had to be Blue Is the Warmest Color.
9:52 p.m. Emma Watson and Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit star, Chris Pine, land to present Best Animated Film. This one has to go to Frozen! The Golden Globe goes to... Frozen!
9:54 p.m. It's Colin Farrell! Farrell presents a scene from the powerful Inside Llewyn Davis. Sometimes these clips don't capture the movie as we wish they would, but boy, oh boy, did that clip nail it.
10:02 p.m. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 star Emma Stone has been chosen to present the Cecil B. DeMille award to Woody Allen. The question is... will he be there to accept? Well, his Annie Hall is... Diane Keaton! And she makes the most amazing of points: Nobody writes female characters like Allen does.
10:15 p.m. Liam Neeson presents a highlight reel of our number one film of the Top 10 Movies of 2013, Gravity.
10:16 p.m. Last year's winner for Best Director, Ben Affleck, arrives to present the award to this year's winner. Our money is on Gravity helmer Alfonso Cuaron. The winner is... Alfonso for Gravity! Seriously, what he accomplished with that film is unmatched. And his prompt thanking of star Sandra Bullock is so fantastic. Can you imagine this movie without her?
10:26 p.m. Jennifer Lawrence presents Best Actor, Comedy or Musical. Who will win? Christian Bale? Bruce Dern? Leo? Oscar Isaac? Or Joaquin for Her? The winner is... Leonardo DiCaprio! Wow, this is surprising, but warranted. The man commanded the screen for three hours in a hurricane of a performance. Perhaps this will help his chances for a Best Actor nomination at the Oscars?!
10:29 p.m. Reese Witherspoon is an interesting choice to introduce a clip from 12 Years a Slave. But what a clip it is! More people need to see this movie.
10:36 p.m. Chris Hemsworth and Niki Lauda (he's there?!!) arrive to present a clip from Rush!
10:37 p.m. Drew Barrymore (looking radiant) presents the award for Best Picture, Musical or Comedy. And the Golden Globe goes to... American Hustle! I tell you, it's their night!
10:45 p.m. Leonardo DiCaprio presents Best Actress, Drama. This has to be Cate Blachett's to lose. And the winner is... Cate Blanchett! OK, ladies and gentlemen, place your wagers now. The star of the Woody Allen film Blue Jasmine will win a Best Actress Oscar. You can count on it!
10:48 p.m. Jessica Chastain is set to present Best Actor, Drama. This is one tough category, probably will be the most competitive that will be awarded tonight. The winner is Matthew McConaughey for Dallas Buyers Club! What a year he is having... and does this mean he is heading into Oscar season as the favorite? Time will tell... but one thing is for sure: That was the best speech of the night!
10:56 p.m. Johnny Depp, quite quietly and unannounced, takes the stage for Best Picture, Drama. And the last winner of the night is... 12 Years a Slave! After a night of not winning their categories, this has got to be truly special for filmmaker Steve McQueen!
