Christopher Nolan always imagined his Batman series as a trilogy. But the key to being able to do that was having a sequel to Batman Begins that was truly worthy. Cast Heath Ledger in an Oscar-winning turn as The Joker and Nolan was on his way to crafting one of the great trilogies of our time.
Coming off the underwhelming thing that was the first Star Trek movie, fans of the series could not have been more thrilled with Kirk and his battle with Khan in the sequel. It has to go down as one of the best sci-fi sequels of all time. Period.
What a brilliant idea for a sci-fi sequel. Take the villain of the first film, that we would argue became iconic, and make him the good guy in the sequel. Bloody brilliant! That James Cameron... never bet against that guy!
Sci-fi sequels, if they have learned anything, up the villain ante in the follow-up. Superman II did that by bringing 3 super-powered baddies to Earth to battle Christopher Reeve and Superman. Bow before Zod indeed!
Better known to fans as simply The Road Warrior, Mad Max 2 benefited from the arrival of VHS in people's homes as Mad Max became a cult hit, leading to the sequel that was Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior. Mel Gibson, frankly, has never been better.
X-Men 2 is a divisive choice, we admit. But, we adored the next chapter in our favorite mutants' saga. It truly set in motion that Magneto versus Professor X battle that is at the heart of the entire series.
