Captain America: The Winter Soldier kept the Easter weekend family and religious fare at bay and took its third weekend box office title in a row. Captain America: The Winter Soldier earned another $26.6 million in its third week of release to bring its total to $201.5 million.
The animated sequel Rio 2 still fared pretty well, coming in second with a second week haul of $22.5 million. Its two-week total stands at $75.4 million. Think we’ll get a Rio 3? I’d bet on it.
Third place found the religious-based true story of a little boy who claimed he went to heaven after a near death experience, Heaven Is For Real. The Greg Kinnear-starring flick earned a solid $21.5 million in its debut week.
Following in next was the debut of Johnny Depp’s latest, Transcendence, which had to be satisfied with the number four position and what had to be a disappointing $11.2 million. Closing out the top five was the other weekend debut, the Marlon Wayans created and starring horror parody, A Haunted House 2. It earned $9.1 million.
