James Cameron's Avatar has set a Christmas weekend box office record with a take of over $75 million! Not only that, but with a drop of a mere 3% from the previous weekend, Avatar is also enjoying the second-biggest second weekend record, right behind The Dark Knight.
Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes took second place with a whopping $62 million, which would have taken the Christmas record home if Avatar hadn't edged it out.
Coming in third was 20th Century Fox's Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel with $48.8 million.
Overall, this represents a huge boost in box office revenue for Christmas weekend, up over $100 million from last year. With the top 4 films alone grossing a collective $200 million, Christmas 2009 has set a record for largest Christmas weekend ever at the box office! Who says the movie industry is in trouble?

- Avatar - $75,617,133
- Sherlock Holmes - $62,390,000
