Tobey Maguire recently spoke to The Boston Globe about his feelings on reprising his role for Spider-Man 4. It seems he wants to move things in a different direction for his next outing as Peter Parker.
"Hopefully I'll be able to evolve the character in a new direction," Maguire said. "He'll still be Peter Parker, but I hope I can move him forward a bit and take him to a place where there will be new challenges for me as an actor."
It seems that everyone realized how bloated and vapid Spider-Man 3 had become, as Maguire's thoughts seem to echo Sam Raimi's admission that things had sort of ballooned out of control and need to be reeled in.
Maguire also cleared the air about reports that he wasn't keen on putting the Spidey mask on again.
"It's not that I was reluctant," he said. "For me, it's a big process to decide whether or not to do a role... I have to want to wake up in the morning and feel like I can't wait to get to work. I've got to feel OK about leaving my kids for 12 or 13 hours a day for five months. It's a big commitment."
We sure hope that Spider-Man 4 is worth the effort. We'll see when the web-slinger swings into theaters on May 5, 2011.
