The clearest memory I have of watching Captain EO at Disneyworld in the late 80's was an asteroid flying out from the screen and exploding on my grandmother's head. That may not sound like the most amazing thing in the world, but as a child, I was absolutely floored.
So, I was ecstatic to find out that the Michael Jackson 3-D short film has returned to Disneyland. The attraction film, directed by Francis Ford Coppola and produced by George Lucas, which originally ran from 1986 to 1997, is being reinstated by Disney in Tomorrowland as the the "Captain EO Tribute."
Visitors to Disneyland in Anaheim, CA can now see Michael Jackson and his ratgag band of furry creatures and androids saving the world again, as it was meant to be seen, projected in 70mm in 3-D in the original theater it used to show in! A new print has been struck for the tribute, and the sound has been improved due to acoustical modifications made to the theater since the film's original run.
In the film, Captain EO and his merry crew discover a colorless planet where they are confronted by the Supreme Leader (Anjelica Huston) and her forces of darkness. Using the power of music, dance and light to fill the planet and the theater with all the shades of the rainbow, the EO crew turns the black and white land into a magical world of color and happiness.
If you can't make it to Disneyland, don't fret! You can watch Captain EO in full right here, in 3-D too! All you need is a pair of classic red and blue 3-D glasses!
