Wally Pfister, the man responsible for the breathtaking imagery of Gotham City in both Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, and more recently, the mind-bending visuals of Inception, recently told MTV News that he wants Batman 3 to be shot completely on the IMAX film format.
"I can't say until I read the script," says the cinematographer, "but it would certainly be my preferred, amazing goal to shoot the whole movie in IMAX... Chris' films are so densely layered and have so much going on visually in every way that IMAX helps enhance that because of the scope and the scale of it- it becomes a much larger canvas to paint on. That's what we found on Dark Knight."
Pfister goes on to say that he's not at all turned on by 3D, and even finds the effect hokey: "I'm not a big fan of 3D. I liken it to my View-Master I had 40 years ago. Are you really getting more out of the story with 3D? When you separate those different planes and you're creating artificial depth, it looks phony to me."
Apparently, Christopher Nolan thinks 3D sucks too. But will Warner Bros. let the duo shoot what is arguably going to be the biggest superhero movie of all time in a process that isn't 3-D? I guess we'll have to wait and see, but Pfister's comments make July 12, 2012 seem so far away!
