Despicable Me Steals Top Spot at Box Office
by Rupert Pupkin at . CommentsUniversal Pictures had a good weekend, with Despicable Me, its first foray into animated features, lighting up the box office with an estimated $60.1 million in ticket sales. Good news, considering the Steve Carell-voiced picture was an unproven move for the studio, and carried a price tag of about $69 million.
The Twilight Saga: Eclipse held strong at second, dropping only 48.5% to add $33.4 million to its box office to end up with $244 million in worldwide ticket sales so far.
Robert Rodriguez' Predators landed third with an estimated $25.3 million, a decent take, considering the film cost only $40 million to produce.
In fourth place this week, Toy Story 3 held strong with a moderate 27% drop in ticket sales, adding $22 million to its take, for a four-week total of $340.2 million. And rounding out the top 5, The Last Airbender dropped a horrendous 57.5% to add $17.2 million, adding up to a total of $100.2 million, falling short of its $150 million price tag.
