Rumors that Star Trek's own Dr. McCoy might play Judge Dredd in the long-awaited reboot of the comic book franchise that last saw a big screen adaptation starring The Expendables star Sylvester Stallone and Rob Schneider. But now Empire Online has confirmed that Karl Urban will definitely be donning the helmet for Judge Dredd.
The new scoop came from a Q&A with producer Andrew MacDonald at BFI's Movie-Con III, which is currently being held in London. Check out what he had to say about the remake:
“The main thing about Dredd is that it’s a fantastic comic that was completely messed up 20 years ago. Our idea is to make a very hard, R-rated, gritty, realistic movie of Dredd in Megacity, so we’ve got to get the tone right. He’s not going to take off his helmet. His bike is going to feel real. He’s going to hit people and it’s going to feel real. There’s been a change in comic-book movies; they were treated unseriously and now they’re treated seriously."
The new film will be directed by Pete Travis (Vantage Point) and will begin shooting later this year in Johannesburg, South Africa, employing much of the same crew who made Neil Blomkamp's District 9.
