Sacha Baron Cohen has signed on to play Freddie Mercury in an upcoming biopic written by Frost/Nixon scribe Peter Morgan. According to Deadline, the film will focus on “the band’s formative years, leading up to Queen’s appearance at Live Aid in 1985.”
Apparently, a rights package has already been set for the band's music. While Cohen is most well-known for his comedic characters in Borat and Bruno, it's going to be very interesting to see him delve into more serious matters as Mercury, but it's unclear whether he'll do his own singing. Production is expected to begin next year.
