Firth, Portman Win Big at the Palm Springs International Film Festival
by Alyssa Caverley at . CommentsColin Firth was honored Saturday by actress Helen Mirren for his role as King George VI in The King's Speech. Firth won Actor Achievement Award for playing the stammering king. This is his first major award for his role in the film, but he has already accumulated many smaller critics awards for his role.
Upon receiving his award from Mirren, she curtsied to him in true royal form.
Another big winner of the night was Natalie Portman, although she turned some heads when she showed up decked out in diamonds, sporting her new engagement ring. She's also got people talking about her ever expanding baby bump. She is sure to be this year's award season sweetheart!
Portman received the Actress Achievement Award for her role in Black Swan. She plays a ballerina who risks everything to be perfect and play the part of the black swan in Swan Lake. Her performance is harrowing and gripping and she's being recognized accordingly.
Both Black Swan and The King's Speech are favored to receive a few Oscar nods this year.
Cary Mulligan, Ben Affleck, and Javier Bardem also received recognition for their work.
