Unknown Leads Holiday Weekend Box Office

by at . Comments

Unknown has proven to be very well-known this weekend as it came in first at the box office, contradicting many early box office predictions.

Early indicators had I Am Number Four coming in first place, with Unknown taking the third place spot after Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son.

Obviously this was not the case, as Unknown pulled in $21.8 million for the top spot.

Liam Neeson Loses His Identity in Unknown

I Am Number Four managed to come in at a close second, bringing in $19.5 on its opening weekend. The film was, as expected, most appealing to a younger audience and any hope for a sequel falls to them, as the box office numbers will determine if a sequel will happen.

The Martin Lawrence sequel Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son did not fare so well this weekend, coming in fifth place on its opening weekend, after two second-weekend films.

Gnomeo and Juliet had a very strong second week, beating out other sophomore weekend films like Just Go With It (#4) and Justin Bieber: Never Say Never (#6).

Although Unknown won the three-day weekend, box office analysts predict Gnomeo and Juliet might surpass the psychological thriller on Monday as kids are out of school for President's Day.

Stay tune for those numbers.

Here are the final number for the regular weekend box office:

  1. Unknown - $21,770,000
  2. I Am Number Four - $19,500,000
  3. Gnomeo and Juliet - $19,400,000
  4. Just Go With It - $18,200,000
  5. Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son - $17,000,000
