Although Rio doesn't hit theaters in the US until this Friday, April 15, it has already opened overseas. The animated comedy from the makers of Ice Age, flew into the international box office with a total of $55 million on 11,600 screens in 72 countries.
Rio follows a domesticated Macaw from Brazil living in Minnesota, who can't fly, but is brought back to Rio de Janeiro where he must escape from kidnappers.
The film beat out Hop by a landslide at the international box office, although it did open in more theaters.
Rio is set to hit theaters this Friday in North America - we'll see if it has the same momentum at the domestic box office.
