Tom Hanks has officially joined the film adaptation of Cloud Atlas, based on the novel by David Mitchell, according to Deadline.

The book will be adapted to the big screen by Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run) and Andy and Lana Wachowski of The Matrix fame.

The novel focuses on six entirely different narratives that stretch from 1850 to the end of civilization in the distant future.

Halle Berry and James McAvoy have also been rumored to be joining the film.

Cloud Atlas, distributed by Warner Bros., will start shooting in September.
