Weekend Box Office: Fast Five Breaks Records
by Alyssa Caverley at . CommentsFast Five opened to better-than-anticipated numbers this weekend -- bringing in $83.6 million opening weekend.
It is the biggest movie opening so far in 2011 and set a new April opening record. The film also did much better than 2009's Fast and the Furious and ended up being Universal biggest opening weekend ever.
The success of Fast Five also knocked Rio down to second place after two weeks on top. But, the animated comedy still did well -- it brought in another $14.4 million, bringing its grand total to $103.6 million domestically.
The other two opening films didn't bring do quite as well. Prom only brought in $5 million, but was estimated to do much better. Hoodwinked Too!: Hood vs. Evil wasn't expected to do as well, but still managed $4.1 million.
