If you are a fan of comic books and action heroes, you are going to enjoy The Green Lantern since it provides a lot of both those things.
The films stars Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan, a headstrong and irresponsible test pilot who doesn't take much in life seriously. Beyond his own comprehension, Hal is chosen to be the next green lantern and fears he's not up to the task. Oddly, without much question, he takes on the challenge, pledging allegiance to a lantern and becoming the first human Green Lantern.
With his newfound powers he meets the other Green Lanterns high up in space and realizes he has a lot to learn about "harnessing the power." When Parralax, the ancient enemy of The Green Lanterns threatens Earth, Hal must find the courage to fight the monster to save his world.
The Green Lantern doesn't have any specific powers -- he can do many different things with his ultimate super power feature, his green ring. The ring allows him to create anything he wants with sheer willpower. But it's not that easy, he needs to find courage in order to access those powers.
Green Lantern has been around a while, so it has large shoes to fill for avid comic book fans who know the characters well. There's quite a lot of action and heroics courtesy of Hal Jordan, but not much in the way of back story. As an audience (not familiar with the comics) we get a sense of why Hal is the way he is - it has something to do with his past - but we don't really get an understanding of how the Green Lanterns came to be and why Hal would have been chosen.
Despite the weak historical elements, the film is a lot of fun and has some great special effects. If you're interested in CG and want to see how it can work in a film, check out this film. It is full of CG effects and great images of the Green Lantern world.
The film also has a great message weaved throughout the film - courage is much more powerful than fear and by emulating and harnessing positive energy and power, you will be able to overcome the obstacles in front of you.
Reynolds is excellent in the role of Hal Jordan and delivers a great performance, both comedic and heroic. He proves to be a great action star with stamina and the ability to deliver an intense performance while performing exhausting stunts.
Blake Lively plays Carol Ferris and proves to be Reynolds' match in every sense of the word. She is a strong female character with an important role - both as Ferris' future CEO and a fighter pilot in her own right. She is far from the damsel in distress, which is nice to see in an action film. It's always disenchanting to see a woman in the role of the victim, and Lively is anything but.
Peter Sarsgaard is chilling as the villainous Hector, a lonely boy who can never live up to his Senator father's (Tim Robbins) expectations. Robbins, Angela Basset, and Jay O. Saunders provide great supporting roles to round out the cast.
Everything about The Green Lantern is a treat, from the great graphics to the very pretty people in the leading roles, it's easy to see why it has garnered so much hype.
It's fun, eye-popping, and has a pretty good message in the ends -- all the right ingredients for a summer blockbuster.
