James Bond is back, big time. Skyfall will be James Bond 23 and Daniel Craig and the Bond gang, including new director and Academy Award winner Sam Mendes, gathered in London to chat about the latest foray into the film franchise that still kicks ass after decades of films.
In Skyfall, Bond’s loyalty to M is tested when her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost.
Daniel Craig simply relished the opportunity to appear as the iconic British secret agent, once more. “In doing a third one, and being lucky enough to have a chance to do a third one, it was my intention to sort of make the best Bond movie we possibly could. And Bond with a capital ‘B.’ I’m incredibly proud to be a part of a film with these talented people who have agreed to come and do it. With their help, we’re going to make that happen,” Craig said.
When asked where he finds his inner James Bond, our blond Bond salutes the series’ scribes. “It’s in the script and that’s where I get it from.”
Our latest thespian's incarnation of James Bond revealed very little about the plot of Skyfall, other than “there’s plenty of action. There’s a great story. It’s a great ride.”
You had Movie Fanatic at “action.”
Working with an Oscar-winning director didn’t reduce the appeal for Craig. “He’s a lifelong Bond fan,” Craig proudly stated of Mendes. “He has thrown himself into this and into this huge machine that is a Bond movie. But he’s got a huge amount of confidence and know-how. He’s a great manager and a superb director. We couldn’t be in a better place.”
Sam Mendes then chimed in about his glee at tackling a legendary movie franchise. “I’ve always been a huge fan of the Bond movies as a child. Of course, every young English schoolboy grows up with them in a sense -- part of my life. I vividly remember when I saw my first Bond movie, which was Live and Let Die and the impact it had on me,” Mendes said. “But there was something else, which was frankly, when I saw my friend Daniel play James Bond in Casino Royale. I thought it opened all sorts of possibilities for the character. I love that movie. When Barbara, Michael and Daniel came to me, I thought the story was fantastic. I love Daniel. I love Judy. I love challenges. And this, this is an enormous challenge and one that I’m extremely pleased that I’ve taken.”
So, will Skyfall be Craig’s last? “I don’t think about it, generally. I’ve been lucky enough to get some really nice roles thrown at me and I grabbed them,” Craig said. “If I could do this for a few more years, I’d be more than happy.”
