DVD Previews: Chipwrecked, Extremely Loud and Blood & Honey

by at . Comments

An Oscar nominee (Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close) and a Golden Globe nominee (In the Land of Blood and Honey) land on home video this week. Also arriving, at the other end of the spectrum, is Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked! Check out our summation of all that’s arriving on Blu-Ray and DVD this week.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close: Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock may be the headliners of Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, but the real star is Thomas Horn. The flick also scored a Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for Max von Sydow who is stellar as the Renter. The film is powerful, moving and for anyone with still strong memories of 9/11, it may be difficult to watch. But one thing is for sure… you will be glad you did. Extras on the Blu-Ray that Movie Fanatic received include the astounding documentary Making Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, Finding Oscar (about the young boy at the center of the story) and Ten Years Later – a look at New York a decade after “The Worst Day.”

In the Land of Blood and Honey: Angelina Jolie scored with her first directing effort on a love story set with the backdrop of the Bosnian Civil War. It is a powerful, yet harrowing account of war that is difficult to watch, but so real in its showing of the horrors of war. The film nabbed a Golden Globe nod for Best Foreign Film and the DVD and Blu-Ray features both versions, in the native tongue of Bosnia and English.

Corman’s World Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel: The man who gave the careers of Jack Nicholson, Martin Scorsese and Ron Howard a boost gets the documentary treatment. Roger Corman may be the king of the “B” movies, but this film is all A-plus. The doc takes you through the history of the filmmaker and features some astounding anecdotes from some of his charges including Nicholson and Scorsese. Check out my exclusive interview with the filmmaker below.

Alvin and the Chipmunks Chipwrecked: Alvin and the gang are back and this time out, they’re going cruising. Knowing the three Chipmunks, things don’t go quite as planned and the guys, the Chipettes and Dave (Jason Lee) wind up stranded on a desert island. Kids will adore the film and parents may want to have a book on hand to read while the kiddies enjoy the flick.

Casablanca 70th anniversary edition: The eternal classic comes home on Blu-Ray in a spectacular box set that includes 14 hours of additional footage and more. Check out our Casablanca Blu-Ray review for more and the following classic scene from the movie:

The Bodyguard: For the first time on Blu-Ray, Whitney Houston’s cinematic triumph arrives in hi-def. The movie that produced one of the most popular songs of all time, I Will Always Love You, is quite the romance, packed with thrills. Check out this scene from the movie where Kevin Costner’s bodyguard saves Houston’s life. More on this amazing Blu-Ray later today!
