As highly anticipated as Prometheus was, it wasn't able to top the weekend box office. That honor goes to Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted. The animated animal flick starring Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer, and Jada Pinkett Smith pulled in $60.3 million in its opening weekend. The solid showing adds to the already successful Madagascar franchise, which has pulled in over $1 billion combined worldwide.
Coming in a close second is Prometheus. The dueling films helped the last few days become the second-highest grossing weekend since The Avengers premiered on May 4. Ridley Scott's Alien prequel starring Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender, and Noomi Rapace, made a solid $50 million after beating Madagascar in the Friday numbers, then tapering off for the rest of the weekend.
Last weekend's winner, Snow White and the Huntsman, dropped to third this weekend with $23 million for a combined box office gross of $98.5 million. Two of the film's big name stars, Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron, appear twice in this weekend's top five. Kristen Stewart is the odd woman out in this category (though she has received plenty of box office love in the past, so don't feel bad).
Men In Black 3 remains solid in its third weekend, earning a fourth-place gross of $13.5 million. Coming in fifth for its seventh straight weekend in the top five is The Avengers, whose $10.8 million earnings brings the film's total domestic gross to third best all time with $572 million.
