The weekend’s new movies are led by two that involve epics. Cloud Atlas is epic in scope and the latest from filmmakers the Wachowskis, of The Matrix fame, and Run Lola Run director Tom Tykwer. Meanwhile, Gerard Butler tackles epic waves in Chasing Mavericks.
Cloud Atlas: Tom Hanks, Halle Berry and Hugh Grant lead an all-star cast in a three hour film that doesn’t feel a second over two hours. The story spans generations, time periods and the universe to tell how in some small way, we as humans are all connected. The way the filmmakers bounce from sequence to sequence is nothing short of masterful. As stated in our Cloud Atlas review, it is one of the best pictures of the year.
Chasing Mavericks: Butler stars as the real life surfer Frosty Hesson, who trained a teenage Jay Moriarity to surf the biggest waves in the world, known as Mavericks. Moriarity would go on to become a huge surfing star and the film is more uneven than even, but as we reported in our Chasing Mavericks review, the surfing sequences are unlike any we’ve ever seen on film.
Fun Size: The joy of Halloween, as told through the eyes of a group of teens, is the central theme of Fun Size. The film comes from Gossip Girl and Chuck creator Josh Schwartz as it moves from the various stories. One highlight arises: A little boy -- whom one of our teens is charged with watching for the night -- has a Halloween evening we all can aspire to experience. Fun Size did not screen for critics… stay with Movie Fanatic for our review.
Silent Hill Revelation 3D: The sequel to the 2006 horror film that was based on the wildly popular video game has finally arrived. When the father of Heather Mason (Adelaide Clemens) disappears, it sends her into an alternative reality that is filled with terror and utter horror. Silent Hill also did not screen for critics and we will bring you our review later today.
