After previous adaptation attempts throughout the latter half of the 20th century, production began on this iteration in 2010, with a debut screening at this year's Cannes Film Festival in May. Now, the film is finally approaching its American release date. Check out the new trailer for On the Road:

Sam Riley stars as Sal Paradise, the alter-ego to author Jack Kerouac. Sal is a young beat writer who sets out on the road with the mercurial Dean Moriarty and his girlfriend Marylou, played by Garrett Hedlund and Kristen Stewart (Breaking Dawn Part 2), respectively.

Amy Adams (Man of Steel), Tom Sturridge, Kirsten Dunst, Elisabeth Moss, Viggo Mortensen, Steve Buscemi (Hotel Transylvania), and Terrence Howard also star. Brazilian filmmaker Walter Salles directs the film, which will premiere December 21.
