No, the year is not 1988, despite the following sentence: The writer for 21 Jump Street has been hired to provide the screenplay for Weird Science.

That's Michael Bacall, writer of the film adaptation of 21 Jump Street, which was released last summer to a highly receptive box-office, and a new Weird Science remake, being planned by Universal.

Weird Science Anthony Michael Hall Kelly LeBrock

Weird Science, written and directed by John Hughes, came out in 1985. Anthony Michael Hall, Ilan Mitchell-Smith, Kelly LeBrock, Bill Paxton, and Robert Downey, Jr. (Iron Man 3) starred.

The new adaptation will reportedly be edgier and more R-rated that the original. It seems like Bacall is just the man for the job, as he turned what could have been a drab, unfunny 21 Jump Street remake into an innovative, hilarious comedy.
