Hansel & Gretel Witch Hunters DVD Exclusive: Inside Special Effects Magic

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters has arrived on DVD and Blu-Ray and Movie Fanatic was invited to a special event where we toured the Academy Award-nominated special effects house and interviewed director Tommy Wirkola for an exclusive video interview. The film is now available with an unrated cut, teased in this Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters red band trailer.

As a lifelong fan, we wondered why Wirkola feels that not only do these fairy tales stand the test of time, but are also ripe for modern updates, like Snow White and the Huntsman before it.

“They have darkness and a moral lesson and go places that a children’s story shouldn’t go,” he said. “That’s why I loved Hansel and Gretel. I listened to a tape of it as a kid and I was scared to death! Burning witches alive and trying to eat children -- it’s pretty dark stuff. You look at children’s stories today and they can’t even come close to the Grimm brothers.”

He was also compelled to see how the sibling story played out... which we found delightful in our theatrical Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters review.

“I always wondered what happened to Hansel and Gretel,” Wirkola said. “And this is the action version of that.”

Wirkola also let us in on why Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton were so perfectly cast as siblings and how their chemistry pops off the screen. “Jeremy was on board first and I saw him in The Hurt Locker. You meet him and you realize he’s really funny as well. That’s what he loved about the script was the mix of tones. It allows him to show a more humorous side of himself.”

Our visit to Spectral Motion was an impressive tour through recent Hollywood special effects history. From the Hellboy movies to the fairy tale magic that pops of the screen in Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, Mike Elizadale has spearheaded a FX house that does it as good as anybody and has the Oscar nominations to provie it.

He was joined by the actor, for our exclusive video interview, who had the difficult task of portraying Edward the Troll in the hit film, Derek Mears. The veteran of dozens of films -- including portraying a Predator -- joined Elizadale for an exclusive video interview with us below!
