The second film in the trilogy picks up where An Unexpected Journey left off, with Gandalf, Bilbo, and the Dwarves continue their quest to take on the dragon Smaug. This time, they must past through Mirkwood, the dark forest.

Martin Freeman returns as Bilbo, with Ian McKellen (X-Men: Days of Future Past) as Gandalf. Evangeline Lilly, Benedict Cumberbatch (Star Trek Into Darkness), Luke Evans, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, Richard Armitage, Cate Blanchett, Elijah Wood, Lee Pace, Aidan Turner, Billy Connolly, and Andy Serkis star.

Peter Jackson directs the film, which will hit theaters December 13.
