On film, audiences have seen Nelson Mandela before, but not like in the hands of Idris Elba (Pacific Rim). The Weinstein Company has unveiled the first trailer for Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom and it's as powerful as you would think it would and should be.
What we saw from Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela in Invictus is only a smidge of what one can expect from this biopic.
In Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, Elba portrays Mandela from his early years. It follows him from being the most wanted South African in the country to his ultimate triumph of release and everything that that ushered in. The film is landing in theaters November 29, just in time for Oscar season. Two things: 1) The Weinstein Company has an uncanny ability to catapult their cinematic efforts into Oscar gold and 2) Its release date is firmly in the realm of the “Oscar awareness” timeframe.
Toss in the fact that this story is one that the best Hollywood screenwriter would dream of imagining and you have, frankly, one of the most anticipated movies of the year.
