The Conjuring is one scary movie, as we stated in our The Conjuring review, and horror fans agreed by showing up in droves and making the James Wan-directed movie number one. The weekend box office also saw Despicable Me 2 continue its impressive run by adding another $25 million to its haul, bringing its total to $276.2 million. But, this week’s big story is the $42 million The Conjuring took in its first week of release.

Turbo debuted and landed in third, with an impressive $21.5 million, while the other two big debuts didn’t quite ignite as much summer heat. Red 2 banked $18.5 million and Ryan Reynolds’ second movie (after Turbo) to premiere this week, R.I.P.D., didn’t even make the top 5. Reynolds and co-star Jeff Bridges can’t be happy with their seventh place finish with $12.8 million.
