Liam James and AnnaSophia Robb seem like they would be two halves of a coin in The Way, Way Back. But, as our The Way, Way Back review stated, this is one of the best ensemble movies of the year and as such, the pair who may or not be love interests (we won't tell!) in the movie, are simply spokes in the most excellent of wheels.
We met the two in Santa Monica recently for an exclusive video interview where each talked about what this heartfelt film meant to them. "What most spoke to me was the mentor part of Sam Rockwell’s character,” James admitted. It is James’ character who is taken under the wing of Rockwell’s and that relationship is the heart of the fantastic The Way, Way Back. “It’s really important that an adult reach out to a child… and having that mentor there.”
For Robb, what attracted her to the film was how everyone in the story is in their own world -- yet are pulled together by some powerful force of emotion. “I feel we have this great motley crew of characters that are struggling with their own issues,” she admitted. The efficiency of the script by Jim Rash and Nat Faxon compelled her. “The script does a very good job of saying it with very few words.”
The pair also dished the power of the man who not only rocks the The Way, Way Back trailer, but is on a career roll after his scene-stealing turn in Seven Psychopaths -- Rockwell. “It was possibly the best experience of my whole life,” James said. “He’s one of my favorite actors of all-time.”
