Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 Destroys Competition: Weekend Box Office Report

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 made mincemeat of the competition and easily won the weekend box office. The sequel to Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs made a whopping $35 million, over three times as much as the second place film, Prisoners. Last week’s number one film, starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal, added another $11.3 million to bring its two-week total to $38.9 million.

Third place belonged to another new film that opened this past weekend, Ron Howard’s Rush. The true story of Formula 1 racing rivals James Hunt and Niki Lauda earned $10.3 million in its first full week in nationwide release, after it opened in a few select theaters the Friday before.

Fourth place belonged to Baggage Claim, the Paula Patton-starring romantic comedy. It earned $9.3 million, as the last new film of the week, Don Jon, came in fifth with $9 million. The Joseph Gordon Levitt directorial debut may have seemed like a disappointing opening, but a small little independent movie opening with an almost $10 million gross is pretty darn good.
