There are three ways to look at the news today that the release date of Fifty Shades of Grey has been pushed back. One, that it is a good thing considering the trouble that Charlie Hunnam quitting the movie caused and that they had to go find someone to replace him and that someone is Jamie Dornan.
Two, that they are having issues with production that is set to start at the beginning of December and that is always a worrisome thing for movie fans. Or three… that the release date they chose is much more fitting in that it is February 14, 2015. That would be Valentine’s Day… how romantic!
We think it is a combination of the first and third reasons. Losing the lead in a film after rehearsals have brought two stars closer in the chemistry department is a hard obstacle to overcome. Giving a film more time to gestate is never a bad thing, although some may argue that it is when it involves reshoots. But, that is not the case here. And we already knew that the Fifty Shades of Grey production was delayed, so the release date bump should hardly surprise.
This is simply an example of a studio giving a filmmaker and their cast more time to get it right. And for fans of E.L. James’ blockbuster book series, that could be the best Valentine’s Day present of them all.
