Walt Disney has released two clips from their upcoming true story of the making of Mary Poppins, Saving Mr. Banks. The film stars Tom Hanks as Walt Disney and Emma Thompson as Mary Poppins author P.L. Travers.
Disney tried for over two decades to get Travers to OK the rights to him in order to make the film that we all know would become a classic. Once the author fell on hard times financially, she felt she had no choice but to bow to Disney’s request, and as we see in the following clips… she did not make it easy.
In this first clip, we see Thompson’s Travers as she initially meets Hanks’ Disney in person.
The second clip shows how Travers was totally averse to her beloved Mary Poppins breaking into song. And the fact that the Sherman brothers were writing songs that contained words that were not real, well, that did not help things.
