One Direction This Is Us DVD Review: One Rocking Stocking Stuffer

by at .  Updated at . Comments

The thing that the One Direction: This Is Us concert documentary has going for it that should give naysayers pause is it is directed by legendary documentarian Morgan Spurlock. The filmmaker puts the pandemonium that is One Direction’s global takeover in complete perspective, and by the time you conclude watching their film, we will bet you’ll be singing one of their songs, or at least possess an increased positive opinion of the lads from the UK.

With the arrival of the One Direction: This Is Us DVD and Blu-Ray, look for those rabid fans of the band to have their go-to stocking stuffer, or perhaps they already have the film and it is on constant repeat at home already!

One Direction This is Us DVD

The One Direction: This is Us DVD and Blu-Ray contains both the theatrical version of the film (check out our theatrical One Direction: This Is Us review) as well as the Extended Fan Cut of the film that features more songs, more behind-the-scenes madness and more… well, 1D!

As seen in the One Direction: This Is Us trailer, the guys came together after “losing” a talent competition in Britain. Simon Cowell saw something in the gents and asked them to stay behind because he wanted to turn them into a group. Little did he know that they would become the biggest band on the planet for several years running now.

Spurlock captures that meteoric rise impeccably and could not have been a better documentary filmmaker to chronicle the 1D world. As someone who is an expert at being non-biased in his documentaries, and simply filming the facts as they are presented to him, it is a unique behind-the-scenes rock documentary. The audience is led to the opinion that these guys are much more than a boy band, they are talented musicians, who just happened to have won the music business lottery. And most importantly, success has not changed them… at all.

For fans of the group, the key to whether the One Direction: This Is Us DVD and Blu-Ray is labeled a success will clearly be the bonus features. And Movie Fanatic can promise you this, 1D fans, you will not be disappointed.

First of all, the Blu-Ray Combo Pack (which also contains the DVD and the 3D format of the film) of the movie gives you 20 full minutes of new footage, four additional songs (each more catchy than the last!) and three featurettes that are sure to delight.

Those are I Didn’t Do It, where the boys try to successfully get through recording promotional tracks for a Japanese radio station. It was hinted at in the theatrical film, but seeing the full scene is frankly, hilarious. Hold That Pose chronicles 1D’s visit to Madam Tussauds wax museum where their likeness will be forever enshrined in wax. This particular bonus feature is a treat as it truly gives a feeling of what these guys are really like when it’s just the five of them hanging out… even if it is to be “waxed!”

Lastly, Up All Night is truly two mini-movies that were only shown on the jumbo-trons at the band’s live shows. It’s a nice addition for fans, that is for sure.

One Direction This is Us Still

We can already hear the screams at the inclusion of the Best Song Ever music video on the This Is Us DVD and Blu-Ray, as well as the five Going Home featurettes that were only hinted at in the theatrical version. Each one follows one of the guys as they head home for the first time since their group’s phenomenal success started. We only got moments of it in previous releases, and to see the guys in their native landscape should only further enhance their fans’ adoration for them as individuals, and as a band.

And lastly, the 1D Family Featurette is the ultimate holiday gift to their fans. It chronicles how those who have supported the group since the beginning are truly the key to their success. It is almost like a love letter to the 1Ders out there in the world.
