The Academy Awards has narrowed the films that could qualify for a nomination for Best Visual Effects to ten films. There are some obvious choices on the list, such as Gravity, Pacific Rim, Iron Man 3 and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. But, the inclusion of Elysium and Oblivion are nice surprises.
Most years, only three films earn a coveted spot as nominees, so this list could be whittled down by two thirds. Here’s who the Academy has announced is eligible to get a nomination when Oscar nods are announced January 16.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
Iron Man 3
The Lone Ranger
Star Trek Into Darkness
Thor: The Dark World
World War Z
Who isn’t on the list is a bit of a surprise… Man of Steel. Could it be another case of DC Comics losing out to its rival Marvel? Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World are on the list. No love for Superman?
