Screen legend Peter O’Toole has passed away, his publicist has said, at the age of 81 years old in a London hospital. He became a global name when he tackled the lead role in the 1962 classic Lawrence of Arabia, directed by David Lean.
Lawrence of Arabia may have been his best known film, but he was a veteran of more than 60 films over a stellar 50-year career. Among Movie Fanatic’s favorites of O’Toole's movies are My Favorite Year, The Lion in Winter and hearing his voice in Pixar’s Ratatouille.
Most recently, audiences recognize him for his role as Pope Paul III on TV's The Tudors. O’Toole will live on in his classic films and two that have yet to be released, Katherine of Alexandria and Mary.
His daughter released the following statement, thanking his fans from across the globe.
"His family are very appreciative and completely overwhelmed by the outpouring of real love and affection being expressed towards him, and to us, during this unhappy time. Thank you all, from the bottom of our hearts," Kate said. "In due course there will be a memorial filled with song and good cheer, as he would have wished."
