SAG Nominations Announced: 12 Years a Slave Leads the Pack

The SAG nominations have been announced and Movie Fanatic’s favorite to sweep the Oscars leads the field, 12 Years a Slave, with four nominations including Best Ensemble (the organization’s version of Best Picture) and Best Male Lead.

12 Years a Slave Star Michael Fassbender

Other films that scored a Best Ensemble nod include the New York Critics’ favorite American Hustle, August: Osage County, Dallas Buyers Club and The Butler. The latter’s chances for Oscar gold had been thought to be a little faded with time, but we’re thrilled to see Lee Daniels and his story of the White House butler still in the running.

In the Female Lead Actor category, several faces we expect to see come Oscar night are represented including Judi Dench for Philomena and Cate Blanchett for Blue Jasmine. For Best Male Lead Actor, those we thought were locks for Oscar gold are there as well, from Bruce Dern for Nebraska to Chiwetel Ejiofor for 12 Years a Slave and Matthew McConaughey for Dallas Buyers Club. Forest Whitaker’s chance for an Oscar nod has increased with his nomination for The Butler.

As far as snubs, if there are surprises, there have to be omissions -- and not on the list are performers from The Wolf of Wall Street and Inside Llewyn Davis. The SAG Awards will be presented on TNT and TBS January 18.
