The Book Thief author Markus Zusak never thought in a million years that his book about an orphan in World War II Germany who discovers a love for the written word and, even more so, her adopted parents would catch on. Millions of copies later, we’re sitting with Zusak and The Book Thief director Brian Percival to talk about that bestselling book becoming a film that has just cracked the weekend box office top 10.
“I think it’s pretty ridiculous,” Zusak said of the book’s success. “I thought it would sink without a trace! It’s all a bit of a crazy dream.”
As can even be seen in The Book Thief trailer, Geoffrey Rush and Sophie Nelisse play the father-daughter tandem with touching brilliance. Percival found their familial chemistry a pure gift. “They were the sort of actors that I dream of working with,” he proudly said.
